Eye twitching is a sudden movement due to contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle, the muscle found in the eyelid. Eye twitching can occur on the upper and lower eyelids. Someone who is experiencing eye twitching will feel as if his eyelids move spontaneously, although sometimes other people are less able to see the movement of the eyelid. Twitching or twitching is episodic (repetitive) and usually this happens within a few seconds or even several hours, but in the end it can disappear by itself.

Eye twitching is often associated with several conditions, such as:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive caffeine consumption
  • Alcohol consumption

In most cases, eye twitching is a mild disorder that will heal by itself and is not related to other diseases. Therefore, eye twitching does not require special treatment. What you need is adequate rest, and reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption. In addition, giving lubricants to lubricate the eyes can also be done if necessary so that the eyes still feel comfortable when a twitch occurs.

On the other hand, there are some dangerous eye twitching conditions that must be consulted with a doctor. Among the symptoms are:

  • Eye twitching lasts more than 1 week
  • Twitching eyes to completely cover the eyes
  • Eye twitching accompanied by twitching on other areas of the face
  • There are additional symptoms in the eyes such as red, swollen, or watery eyes

As for conditions where eye twitching occurs in a long time, severe and very disturbing, the possibility of the condition is not a normal symptom, but a sign of other more severe diseases such as hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, Meige syndrome, spastic-paracial facial contractures, and multiple sclerosis.
